It's not as bad is it looks

203 vs 60 is a pretty comprehensive hammering we got at the hands of Orpington CC, but fortunately our next meal is not dependent on the result so we can quickly move past the loss and focus on the good things and what to do next.
As a reminder, in this league umpires are not allowed to coach players on the field which means when you see things going wrong you cannot immediately step in to set them straight, you have to hope the boys self adjust. Now while self adjustment took a while in some instances and we lost a lot of runs in the process, I am delighted that most of the boys did self correct through the match or through their bowling spells and this is a great foundation to build on.
We were also playing on a full 22 yard pitch which is an adjustment needed from the U13 setup of a 19 yard pitch. Two real standouts were Ishan and Neil who bowled short in their first overs but did an excellent job to correct in their second.
We also saw a growing confidence in Jacob who was our captain for the day, Suhaan is really starting to show glimpses of what he can do with the bat and Neil is starting to look like a genuine all-rounder. Great bowling by Steven and Max and general positive attitude by all the boys when it came to having a go.
I think some of the boys were wondering why we pushed them so hard on the fielding last Friday, but the great thing about a match like this is that it provides the needed context and I'm hoping between this experience and the training sessions they will have both the motivation and understanding now to step up a level.
We have two main things to work on. 1) The field setting was again a weak area although this is very difficult to get right and not something we have specifically focused on. This Friday I will see if Dean can run a master class with the captains to help them effectively set a field. 2) Bowling accuracy is letting us down although we know these boys can definitely bowl well, so I think some net time is needed this coming Friday.
Lastly George unfortunately missed Friday training and the keeping master class so we need to definitely run another one and keeping is one of the toughest jobs on the pitch.
As the expression goes, "it can only get better" and when it does it will feel good.
