Play The Game

Election season got us thinking about famous TWSs like Get Breakfast Done, Stop The Goats, and Shave The NHS. So we came up with a couple of our own this morning as takeaways from our outing last week - Watch The Ball and Make Some Noise. Unfortunately though, as we will learn later, we didn’t talk about Yes-No-Waiting and Leave Outside Off.

On the positive, Watch The Ball worked well, and all players got an outing in the middle. Captain Nicholas won the toss and elected to bat. Fin & Thomas opened and got off to great start, 6 runs for no wicket after the first over. So far so good.

What followed was a sharp catch at fly slip to take out Fin, Rocco finding the cover fielder from an aerial shot off his first ball, a straight ball to take Thomas’s middle stump, and an inaudible No to leave Nicholas stranded run out. 6/4 off 3 overs.

Xav & Damien kept their eye on the ball for the next 3 overs to steady proceedings and pick up a few handy boundaries off loose deliveries before Damien’s loss and Xav running himself out in quick succession.

Out come the Shipley brothers after Narayan’s short stint, with Aran in particular showing a lot of enterprise that youth often bring. A couple of boundaries later, Aran had the option to play himself in or go after every ball, and chose the latter as youth often do, which didn’t come off.

Yuvan to the crease to see the team past 10 overs in the 20-over match, a couple of good shots, including a glide to the third man boundary, which brought about a field change and then off the very next ball the same glide but this time into the hands of first slip. All out for 43.

Mid-innings chat was about making BCCC earn the runs and take it as deep as possible, if only to enjoy the beautiful sunny morning and the appealing views of horses grazing on meadows in South London.

Credit to skipper Nicholas for deploying the Make Some Noise pre-match brief, we looked a lot more like a cricket team and less like a champion chess squad! Good disciplined bowling as usual, this has never been the problem, but sadly not enough runs on the board to keep the opposition down, who won with the loss of only one wicket which went to Yuvan with a good catch by Owen.

More learning then for next week, and excellent experience for the young team that no doubt will be taken into Under 15s leagues next year too. To quote another famous line, Play The Game!
